Jobs for New Grads

How can a recent graduate get experience if no one will hire us unless we have experience. There needs to be some program out there to help us new RT's. Anyone out there can offer any advice.

We are very lucky to have a Manager that hires new grads. We also hire Respiratory Students after their first year of RT school is completed. Our department has been evolving and rapidly expanding in the last couple years and we are always looking for more staff. If you know of anyone that is looking for a job and would not mind moving to Des Moines, Iowa send them our way! I work at Unity Point Health - Des Moines and it is a great place to be.

Willie,
One great way to gain experience and make contacts for future job opportunities is volunteering! Not only can you put volunteer experience on your resume, you'll also be benefitting your community and spreading awareness of the profession!

Willie- I echo Keith's sentiments. Be flexible and be willing to travel or relocate. I can point you to some hospitals that will consider new grads so e-mail me at Michael.Nibert@HayekMedical.com if you need my assistance. Keep motivated and focused and you will be employed soon at your first Respiratory Care position!

I empathize with your plight, Willie. I experienced that same frustration 30-plus years ago when I was a new grad. And your question is valid. Since becoming a department director nearly 20 years ago, I have hired many new grads. I am of the opinion that to overlook a candidate simply because that candidate lacks experience is a big mistake. Many of the new grads I hired became my most valuable employees and have gone on to be outstanding RTs.
I don't have an answer to your problem, but my advice to all the department directors out there is to look beyond the "years of experience" part of the resume, and look at the quality of the candidate. You likely won't be sorry!
