Competative Job Market

I agree with having to use every avenue and opportunity it making sure you stand out (in a good way) to those making hiring decisions. In San Diego we recently had nearly 150 applicants for an RT Assistant position and ended up with an BS/RRT to process equipment, a job simply requiring a high school diploma ! That was an unconventional route into our stystem to eventually become a therapist. Students and applicants now stay in touch with me via Facebook, Linkedin, and emails. The entire application and screening process is also now on-line. You do have to be carefull not overload e-media as I already get about 200 emails per day, but reaching out every month or so is something I do not mind and can give some an edge. In addition, we have students volunteering, not only at our hospital, but at community events. It gives them an advantage in seeing them sincerely active in the community, and we hold them to that ongoing engagement once hired. I do remember the days when we had 6 openings and one applicant. I goes in cycles, but regardless I think the future is bright for anyone choosing a career as a respiratory therapist.

I'm not so sure the future is all that bright. I can only hope "it goes in cycles" as I just keep seeing departments and RT skills being cut.

I agree Rick. I think the future will have more opportunities and openings. Today though we are hard pressed to find employment. Especially those with good experience.
