HIGH FLOW o2 AT HOME

By Nancy D'Ambrosio posted 11-08-2010 12:49

Anyone have experience with using the Salter High Flow nasal cannulas and high flow humidifier bottles on flows higher than 8 L/min.  Are they tolerated.  Can they be used with a 10L concentrator?  I'd appreciate any help or suggestions as we are being requested by our Hospice accounts to supply this in the home.

Hi Nancy
Although what I have to say will not be of any immediate help you may want to file this away for future reference. I saw a new product from Fisher-Paykel today that is very much like a CPAP machine with an incorporated heated humdifier. It provides air flows from 15-45 liters/min. It also has a nipple adapter on the back that allows you to bleed in 02. In my home care days I saw lots of patients who needed humidity but they were not always hypoxemic. It sounds like you see patients who need both (plus a little positive pressure?) This product is apparently "brand new" and is called Airvo.

The Salter 7900 Humidifier is for concentrators with greater than 621 Mbar source pressure f and flows from 6 lpm to 10 lpm. You may want to try an Oxymizer from Chad Theraputics, which may help reduce the liter flow. They cost about $40.00.

Nancy,
The answer is yes to both questions. I have used it and the patients tolerate it very well. I have had no problems using it in conjunction with a concentrator.
