Smoking Congress!?

By Jay Taylor posted 12-10-2010 15:50

Having just returned from the 56th International Respiratory Congress with a sore throat and upper respiratory congestion, all I can say is that it's about time the AARC recognized Vegas for the smoking pit that it is.

I would strongly encourage our membership to never hold a congress there again and to look hard at the cities and hotels we plant ourselves in.

As supporters of HEALTH AND BREATHING, having fun in the midst of a 2nd hand smoke arena is not what I consider to be in our best interest.

Agree whole-heartedly!!! Of course, it probably goes hand-in-hand with the disdain I get from my Administrator who oftentimes comments on how many of our RCPs smoke. REALLY?? OK, I know they do, but it really is setting a bad example. Kinda like an obese Cardiologist telling a patient they need to lose weight because it's hard on their heart. As a professional organization, the AARC should look to support only non-smoking facilities for any of their Congresses; there are plenty of great facilites that are smoke-free!

Jay, looks like you're getting the same painful silence I got in 2005 (or was it 2006?) ....we have different leadership now....and it would hardly be "leading" the way....how about jumping on the bandwagon and choose smoke free cities? I would consider going to one of these if we put our money where our mouth is! Thanks for continuing to bring it up, jay, some of us gave up! You renew my hope!
