9/11 Ten years on... some random thoughts

Here we are, ten years and ten days past September 11, 2001- a day which is unforgettable for many of us. Many thoughts still are in my mind about what happened a decade ago; vivid pictures, sounds, news reports, articles, books- stories of the survivors and those who were lost. Stories of uncommon bravery and selfless valor. Ordinary people performing extraordinary acts under the most impossible circumstances. Why write about this here, in a Respiratory Care forum? What place does this topic have here? It's been ten years, why keep bringing this up? Maybe you have these questions, maybe not. Most of you today probably remember where you were when you heard, but likely can't recall what you had for breakfast yesterday. September 11, 2001 has different meanings to and different impacts on everyone. For those of us in the fire service, it hits especially close to home- what those firefighters did even amazed their own leadership, and brings a whole new sense of pride and humility to those of us in that service. The passengers aboard Flight 93- placing their destiny into their own hands with moments of extraordinary courage. The people in the Pentagon, military and civilian alike, rushing in to help their colleagues. Perhaps you know someone who was taken away from us on that day, or know of someone- a friend of a friend. Or you were in a hospital somewhere, caring for victims, or waiting for casualties that never came.  You know that Respiratory Therapists were right there, in the trauma centers and the ERs, treating patients like we always have done and continue to do. Tornados, blizzards, hurricanes, earthquakes... the list continues. What is one of the constants? Respiratory Therapists. I guess that's enough rambling. Thanks for reading.
