Small rural hospital starting to use heated high flow. How often is everyone seeing their patients on high flow? What are you requiring for documentation? Any help is greatly appreciated.

Hi Caroline,
I work in a city hospital, and we've had HFNC for a few years now I believe. We see them often, but it really depends on what physicians are on or if the RRT suggests it. I have seen it work pretty well on most patients, the ones that are "in between" needing a NRB and non-invasive ventilation. I have seen that if we wait too long or if the patients are just bad enough they end up intubated or on NIV. What we require is the flow and FIO2. The units we use have a blender with the flowmeter. The nurses are allowed to move the FIO2 dial if necessary but NOT the flow. They have to call us. Hope this helps!
