Ghana Medical Mission Opportunity ~ Spring 2014

(Approx 800 nursing and midwifery students were taught BLS during our 2 month visit in 2013.  This is one of the nursing classes we taught at St. Patrick's Midwifery School in Offinso, Ghana)

Imagine living in a world where your annual income is <$1000/year…
Imagine living in a world where your lack of income significantly reduces your access to healthcare…
Imagine living in a world where your inability to pay $10.00 for an emergency room visit may result in the death of your child from malaria…
Imagine living in a world where basic needs such as food and clean water are a daily concern…

Now imaging traveling to this world and sharing your skills and expertise to provide much needed health care, health education and humanitarian aid.

We have a few spots open in our spring mission to Ghana and we are looking for students and/or practitioners who want a life changing experience.  The trip is approx 3 ½ weeks long and will include a great deal of time spent interacting with local communities, providing care and education throughout the country.  Additionally, the group travels to key cultural and historical sites.

Mission dates:

April 30 to May 25, 2014
(Dates are tentative pending airfare)

$2500.00 covers lodging, ground transportation,
some meals, tours and national park admissions
(Participants cover their own airfare)

Since 2006, over 100 respiratory therapy students, practitioners, other health care providers and community members have traveled to Ghana to offer free health clinics, community health education and humanitarian aid.  We also work side by side with health care professionals in small (75-150 bed) rural hospitals and large (2000 bed) teaching hospitals.

The most recent exciting development in Ghana is the development of respiratory therapy education.  Since the visit of Dr. Audrey Forson, a respiratory physician from Korle Bu Teaching Hospital (KBTH) selected by the AARC as an International Fellow, steps have been taken to begin developing a respiratory therapy program that will be housed in the University of Ghana at KBTH.  A portion of our mission to Ghana will be spent at KBTH providing support to this developing program and providing education and care where possible.

(See the AARC Times December 2013 issue article about RT development in Ghana)

If you are ready for an amazing experience, please contact Lisa Trujillo at ltrujillo@weber.edu for more information.  Group meeting will begin as early as mid January in order to prepare for the trip.  Participants from states other than Utah are welcome and will join the meetings via video conference.
