Contribute Your Stories of Patient Experiences to AARC Times

By Marsha Cathcart posted 02-23-2016 17:21

AARC Times has begun a new column called “Storytellers,” where AARC members can share stories about their favorite or most memorable patient. Maybe it was an “aha moment” when you knew you had made the right professional decision for that patient. Maybe it was when you first realized how much difference you were making in the lives of that patient and his family.

Or maybe it was just something the patient said or did that made you laugh or cry or just be inspired to be a better respiratory therapist.

We hope you will contribute your stories to this column and share your world. Send them directly to me at cathcart@aarc.org and say “Storytellers” in the subject line. Hope to hear from you soon!

I spent 26 years in a hospital providing Respiratory Care.   I loved the ER and the excitement  I taught CPR and  ACLS , Asthma class was part of the code team and enjoyed  being a reference point to my CO Workers . What I most enjoyed wad the older patients especially those without filter.  They made me laugh until I cried or turn a red hue I have never seen .  Two or three specific which I will try to keep clean old but full of life patients . One roommate of my patient was watching Elvis Pressly  I innocently said look Elvis the pelvis  this very demure lady stated he had a brother named enis  another  I asked a patient  ( who was 102)  to let me borrow a digit to get a pulse ox  reading she asked me and showed me her middle finger and said  will this  one work  I said  no you didn't yes I did I am 102 I will do what I want chuckling every time I came in the room.  A 106 Yr old patient  who  Had a 85 year old son 95 year old boy friend  led her assisted care exercise class  intubated twice went home told me not  too bad for 106  now I am retired but working in a Nursing Home as a Consultant using BIPAP  love my Senior Patients
