How do we know what really is optimal PEEP for normal lungs

This question is from my side to create a discussion on what should be normal PEEP in the ventilated adult patient with normal lungs? We think we know how much PEEP should be used in the ARDS patient even though too much PEEP impacts dead space. We use some PEEP in the COPD patient to avoid air trapping and to minimize the WOB.

But in normal lungs we use PEEP of say 5 cmH2O and we believe this value show be okay, but is it ever challenged?

I look forward to an interesting discussion.
